Get transported back to the 19th century as you visit two of Louisiana's most historic plantations, Oak Alley Plantation and Whitney Plantation. Each offers a unique perspective on the region's rich and complex history as you travel through lush gardens, broad sugarcane fields, and the scenic landscapes of the historic Mississippi River Road. Your journey follows the famous 70-mile Mississippi River Road, renowned for its magnificent plantation homes and beautiful scenery. Your first stop is Oak Alley Plantation, instantly recognizable by its breathtaking quarter-mile canopy of centuries-old live oak trees leading to the grand mansion. Built in 1837 as a thriving sugarcane plantation, Oak Alley showcases elegant antebellum architecture while sharing the story of its rise, decline following the Civil War, and ongoing preservation efforts by the nonprofit Oak Alley Foundation, which now cares for the estate's 25 acres. Your New Orleans plantation tour then continues to Whitney Plantation, the only plantation museum in Louisiana dedicated exclusively to telling the story of slavery in the United States. Situated on the site of a former sugar, indigo, and rice plantation that operated from 1752 to 1975, Whitney Plantation offers a powerful and educational experience through immersive exhibits, preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and first-person narratives that honor the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked there. Guests may explore the plantation at their own pace using the award-winning audio tour, available in six languages, or join a guided tour led by knowledgeable interpreters. Through its exhibits and educational programs, Whitney Plantation provides a meaningful opportunity to remember, reflect, and gain a deeper understanding of this important chapter in American history. Please Note: Pick up begins approximately 90 minutes PRIOR to scheduled tour departure time. The closest pickup location to the cruise terminals is 827 Tchoupitoulas St. It is about a 5 to 15-minute walk or a 2 to 5-minute taxi (not included, approximately $7 US), depending on where your ship is docked. This tour is not a transfer tour, and cannot accommodate luggage.
