Set within a thick rainforest, Altun Ha was once a prosperous ceremonial hub, featuring two main plazas and 13 temples and residential structures, including the Temple of the Sun God. As you tour the site, learn about the city's 2,200-year-old history, during which it served as a trading link between the Caribbean coastline and the interior Maya centers in the Classic Maya period. It's also here that Belize's famous Jade Head was discovered. The jade carving depicts the Maya sun god, "Kinich Ahau," and weighs nearly 10 pounds. Its likeness is found on all Belizean currencies. The jade from which it was carved was from ancient mines along the Motagua River valley in eastern Guatemala.
