Description

Évora was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. According to the organization, Évora is a city-museum whose roots date back to Roman times. The golden age was in the 16th century, when it was the residence of Portuguese kings. The Capela dos Ossos was built in the 17th century on the initiative of three Franciscan friars whose objective was to convey the message of the transience and fragility of human life. This message is clearly conveyed to visitors at the entrance, through the warning: “We bones that are here, we wait for yours”. The castle of Monsaraz played for centuries the role of lookout point for the Guadiana, from where you could see the border with Castile. The medieval town of Monsaraz, protected by its walls, is a small village, with its schist streets and whitewashed walls. It has as a backdrop a breathtaking view over the Alentejo landscape and the Alqueva reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Europe.
