Description
Highlights of Corfu Discover the lush countryside of Corfu and see the major sites while on this cultural excursion. Your comfortable journey begins with a scenic ride through the panoramic island to Gastouri, a traditional village full of centenarian olive groves, and home of Achilleion Palace. This famous landmark was a summer palace built in 1891 by order of Elizabeth of Bavaria, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary who was affectionately nicknamed Sisi by her family. She named this neoclassical white mansion after her admiration of the classical Greek hero Achilles. While here, take some time to check out the beautiful frescoes, see the fine sculptures dotting the gardens and enjoy views of the coast from the mansion's Italian terraced gardens. Continue from here to Kanoni, a small town on a hill at the edge of the Old Town of Corfu. From this vantage point you can watch the fisherman in their boats and grab a shot of iconic Mouse Island and Vlacherna Monastery, one of the most photographed spots in Corfu. Once in the Old Town you will visit many historical sites, including the city's 14th century Venetian Old Fortress, Town Hall and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. Stand in Esplanade Square, one of the largest in Europe, and visit St. Spyridon Church among others. Walk through Liston with its cafes and arcaded terraces that was once the haven of the aristocrats. You will also have time to explore the town and do some shopping. Drive past the old port with its traditional fishing boats and the New Venetian fortress on your way back to your ship. Book this popular tour now for a great overview of the rich history and true beauty of Corfu. Please Note: Audio guides are included at the Achilleion Palace with a regular ticket. Entrance tickets to the Achilleion Palace (approximately 10 EUR per person) are not included. Category
