Doha was a small fishing and pearling village until oil production in Qatar began in 1949. Since then it has become a modern city, with a deepwater port and an international airport. Fishing is still an important industry.

Dubbed the Garden City of the Gulf, Abu Dhabi now offers visitors a variety of options to explore, such as green parks, clean beaches, and a range of marine and other sports, from powerboat races to sand-skiing and exotic adventures in the desert. Tourists can also pay a visit to the oasis city of Al Ain and enjoy a sightseeing tour to archaeological and leisure sites such as Al Hili Fun City.

Dubai is a popular destination for a relaxing beach holiday, an adventurous desert experience, wild nightlife or a weekend away to shop in the electronics and gold markets. An aura of charm and tranquility surrounds La Digue. This island is accessible by boat and helicopter; about two and a half hours from Mahe and thirty minutes from Praslin. The city of Mombasa is located primarily on Mombasa Island in the Indian Ocean and partly on the mainland (to which it is connected by a causeway). It is Kenya's chief port and an important commercial and industrial center. Manufactured goods include processed food, cement, and glass. The solid economic foundation, which includes oil refining, has paved the way for a healthy tourist industry in recent years.

For many centuries, traders from Europe, India, the Orient and Arabia were lured to these shores. It was from here that explorer David Livingstone set off on his last expedition into the heart of the continent. Today, as you walk along the winding streets of the old Stone Town, lined with whitewashed coral rag houses, you can see reminders of this rich history all around you. Visit the Palace museum, former residence of the Omani Sultans, and the cathedral that now stands on the site of the notorious slave market.

The former capital of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and its communications, and economic center. Founded in 1866 by the sultan of Zanzibar, Dar-es-Salaam was a small town when German forces occupied it in 1887. In 1891 it became the capital of German East Africa, but its main growth began during World War II.

Nosy Be, the largest island off Madagascar is known as "the perfumed isle" for its profusion of ylang-ylang, patchouli, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and saffron. It is also a holiday resort with a colonial French atmosphere. Here you will have the chance of visiting Nosy Komba, set aside to protect the small, endearing primates known as lemurs, which are indigenous here.

Mauritius, an island of volcanic rock, is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. Found on the west coast of the island, Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius. Visit the many forests or head to the mountain for a breathtaking view of the sea. Or head into town for some shopping.
