Description
Visit the lighthouse or "fanari" as locally known which translates to "Lantern" from Greek. Standing like a sentinel over the Amenistis area, the fanari is a testimony to the maritime history of Mykonos. To reach the lighthouse, you will travel the road from Agios Stefanos offering the island's most spectacular views. Located just 6.5 km (4 miles) from Mykonos, the lighthouse, constructed in 1891, stands 19 meters tall (62' feet) with a focal plane height of 184 meters (604' feet). The Aegean Naval Museum spotlights Mykonos' historical nautical past housing old maps, navigational instruments, model ships and a museum garden with large anchors and of course the lighthouse, the most towering lighthouse in the Aegean. The museum stands in a 19th-century building close to Three Wells or Tria Pigadia (fully functioning water drinking wells until the 1950s).The scenery from the lighthouse is breathtaking. Along with a view of the new port area in Mykonos, the neighboring island of Tinos (home to one of the holiest shrines in Greece) appears to look as if it were right next to you due to the strategic positioning of the lighthouse.A visit to the fanari will provide a great sense of the island's fascinating history, and views that will make the photographers of any skill level have their mouths water.
