Lisbon has always been a meeting‐place for different people. Important Jewish communities settled in this region and contributed to the flourishing of its trade and culture. This tour is the opportunity to see some of the most important Jewish heritage in the city, such as the Lisbon Synagogue built in the 19th century, the Rossio, where the Court of the Inquisition was held, at the site where the Dona Maria national theatre and the Jewish Memorial stand now. Near the Penha de França district is located the Jewish Cemetery built in 1868 and still used by the Jewish community, its grave markers are generally horizontal, in the Sephardic fashion. In Alfama, one of the most emblematic districts of Lisbon, there was a small Jewish quarter until the 14th century built on land that Dom Dinis had given to their chief rabbi, Judas Navarro.
Lisbon is many cities, from the cobbled alleys of the Alfama district to the broad Parisian style avenues at its heart. View it all from the heights of St. George's Castle. Belem's Monument to the Discoveries recalls the seafaring past, while nearby Sintra's storybook palaces, and the seaside resort of Caiscais, have different tales to tell.
