Description

Full Day Tour to Obidos, Batalha, Nazare and Fatima The first stop of the day is in Fatima. The history of Fatima centers around three children -- Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta -- who witnessed an apparition of a lady dressed in white while guarding their sheep. She visited the children on the 13th of each month from May until October. The last apparition was witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims, who saw the Miracle of the Sun. Our Lady of Fatima sent a message that consisted of three secrets: first, a vision of Hell, where the souls of the sinful would travel without prayer; the second, which prophesied the beginning of the Second World War; and a mysterious third secret, which is held by the Vatican. Your first point of visit is the Sanctuary, the location of the Basilica with the tombs of Jacinta, Francisco, and Lucia, the Chapel of Apparitions, the heart of the Sanctuary, and the new Church of the Holy Trinity, the fourth largest in the world by capacity. You will be given free time to explore or possibly attend part of a mass, if one is going on. Then you will head to Batalha and visit another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Monastery of Batalha, founded in 1386 A.D., a Gothic masterpiece with finely worked stained-glass windows. Your tour continues to the picturesque and colorful fishing town of Nazare, where you will have free time for lunch on your own, and to learn about the legends and traditions of this town. After departing from Nazare, if time and weather permits, you may go to Sitio to marvel at its wonderful views out over Nazare and its beaches. The last stop is at Obidos, an approximately one-hour drive through the Portuguese countryside. The town, located on a hilltop, and encircled by a fortified wall, dates back to the time of the Roman occupation. The castle remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture reflected in its streets, squares, walls, and rustic white houses. As you tour, you will learn about the rich and varied local traditions of the town.
