The ancient city of Sardes, once the capital of the Lydia Kingdom had a significant size Jewish community, is currently has one of the oldest synagogues in the world. During our tour, you will have the opportunity to explore the ruins of this ancient city, such as the majestic Bath Gymnasium and the ancient Anatolian Synagogue. You will be amazed how the ancient people of Sardis were able to use the thermal waters to heat the city, private houses, and baths, including the ancient shops.
The largest Turkish seaport after Istanbul, its exports include cotton, tobacco, vegetables, manufactures, and carpets. The city suffered greatly from severe earthquakes in 1928 and 1939. It is a NATO command center for SE Europe. It is also the site of the Aegean Univ. and several museums, and was probably the birthplace of the poet Homer.
