The Nuruosmaniye Mosque is an 18th-century Ottoman mosque located in the Çemberlitaş neighbourhood of Fatih district in Istanbul, Turkey. Suleiman is said to have personally mourned the death of Mehmed for forty days at his temporary tomb in Istanbul, the site upon which the imperial architect Mimar Sinan would construct a lavish mausoleum to Mehmed as one part of a larger mosque complex dedicated to the princely heir. - The last of the classical Ottoman Mosques, Yeni Valide Sultan Cami was completed between 1660 and 1665 after a series of false starts seven decades earlier. At the time it still stood inside the old Byzantine Sea walls. It dominates the entrance to the Golden Horn whether you arrive by sea or from the European quarters across the Galata Bridge. - The Süleymaniye Mosque dominates the Old City skyline, crowning it with the most elegant cascade of domes of any Ottoman Mosque. The surrounding area is a treasure-trove, where the connoisseur goes for a ramble after ticking the sights at the tip of the peninsular off the to-do list. - The sixteenth-century imperial architect Sinan’s masterpiece, below the far end of the Hippodrome, is famed for its superb Iznik tiles – there are fewer than at the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, but they are in perfect harmony with the architecture. The mosque is built on the side of a hill, which Sinan used to theatrical effect. When you arrive, enter the courtyard from the front gate, where the domes of mosque and ablution fountain are beautifully framed by the arched gateway. Especially beautiful in the rain. - For the greatest collection of 16th-century Iznik tiles in the world, head to this mosque. It is down a busy street by the Spice Bazaar where they make everything wooden, from rolling pins to barrels. The entrance, up a dark flight of stairs, in no way prepares you for the blaze of colour within: an Iznik paradise garden. - Over the centuries, Istanbul’s Grand bazaar has acquired a justly legendary reputation as one of the most famous shopping emporiums in the world. - Everything the heart desires can be found in this ancient, hectic maze. With more than 3,000 shops in 61 covered streets, the Grand Bazaar is like a medieval shopping mall, and one of the most animated and colorful parts of the city.
