Jameson Distillery and Dublin with Private Transportation On this half day tour with private transportation, you will be picked up at port in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and see the highlights of Ireland's capital city. Then you will be whisked away to the Jameson Distillery, where you will get the chance to visit the distillery on your own. In 1780, John Jameson purchased the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin and opened for business. Whiskey, at that time, was the second most popular spirit in the world behind rum. Within 25 years, Jameson was the world's leading producer of whiskey. For the next 200 years, Jameson has remained in the top three of whiskey producers despite several blows that might have taken down a smaller distillery, these included the Irish Temperance Movement, The Irish War of Independence, and the biggest challenge, prohibition in the United States, their largest market. You will start your half day tour with an orientation drive through the city. Dublin City is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and sits on a splendid bay at the mouth of the River Liffey with the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains rising from its southern suburbs. It is internationally noted for its writers, Georgian architecture, witty natives and the production of Guinness! Since its beginning as an ecclesiastical settlement it has over time been a key Viking raiding and trading base, a Norman stronghold, second city of the British Empire and capital of an independent state. On your city orientation, you will view all the main sights of the capital including the Phoenix Park, O' Connell Street, Georgian Dublin, Merrion Square, and Dublin Castle. You will then make your way to the John Jameson Bow Street Distillery in Smithfield, that sits on the location of the original distillery. Although whiskey is no longer produced in Dublin, you will still get a full appreciation for the art. You will enjoy admission to the recreated distillery and access to the Jameson Discovery Bar, where a complimentary glass of Jameson and optional mixer awaits you. You will then be returned to the cruise pier. Please Note: As the guided tour of the Jameson Distillery cannot be booked in advance, guests may have to wait for the time slot that is available. The tour of the distillery is provided by Jameson staff. Private guides are not permitted in the distillery.
