The Chellah is a walled ruin of a town that lies in a short walk from the current medina of Rabat, south of the Ville Nouvelle. Designated a World heritage Site in 2012, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Rabat and houses both Roman ruins and a medieval Muslim necropolis. The tower only reached 44 m, about half of its intended 86 m height. The rest of the mosque was also left incomplete, with only the beginnings of several walls and 200 columns being constructed. The tower, made of red sandstone, along with the remains of the mosque and the modern Mausoleum of Mohammed V, forms an important historical and tourist complex in Rabat. - Rabat's early history is based around this Kasbah.
