Hyperbolically known as the Paris of Arabia, Jeddah is one of the few cities in the region to have built around, rather than over, its history. Jeddah has one of the best souks (markets) in the kingdom, the spectacular Souk Al-Alawi, which winds its way through the old city. Although some sections of it have been paved over, and others fitted with bizarre green and white columns, it's still a great place to spend hours strolling and browsing.

The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway running across the Isthmus of Suez in northeastern Egypt. It connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez, an arm of the Red Sea. The canal, about 101 miles long, has no locks because the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Suez have roughly the same water level. Most of the canal has only a single traffic lane, with several passing bays.

Alexandria was once considered the greatest city in the ancient world; today it is the second largest city in Egypt. As a port perched directly at the mouth of the Nile, it is the gateway to one of the world's most mysterious and intriguing regions. Walk along the Corniche, a seaside boulevard that is home to restaurants, beach huts, and an unbroken line of hotels and apartment buildings.

Gythios is a small seaside town south of Sparta on the Peloponnesian peninsula. Home to some 2,000 year-round residents, Gythios expands tenfold during the summer months as sun worshippers from around the world flock to the beaches. Favorite local attractions include seaside cafes that serve up local specialties, and an ancient theater where the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles are performed.

Piraeus is the seaport for Athens, the capital of western civilization, which boasts a fantastic mix of classical ruins and vivacious modern life. In a single day, you can climb the hill of the Acropolis to wonder at the Parthenon, join the lively Athenians in Constitution Square, and then find a welcoming taverna for some spirited bizouki music, plenty of ouzo to drink, and with luck, energetic Greek dancing.

Monemvassia means single entry - there is only one way in - through the gigantic iron doors. Throughout history this was the perfect place to live in since it was almost impossible to invade. Today as you walk through the narrow cobble stone paths you will find a lively marketplace full of cafes and restaurants, antique stores and shops full of handcrafted items and art.

Katakolon is your gateway to Olympia, where the ancient Greeks flocked every four years for more than a millennium to celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. Visit the ruins of the Sanctuary, with its athletic quadrangles, stadium-temples and treasuries; then browse in the modern Archaeological Museum, a treasure house of Archaic, Classical and Roman sculptures, including the famous Niki "Winged Victory."

Sousa or Susah is an important port for Tunisia. The town was originally a Phoenician settlement (called Hadrumetum) and you can actually visit a ninth century monastery and fortress, the "ribat", that dates back to that era. Search the local suqs (marketplaces) for olive oil or other bargains.

This Andalusian city is gateway to Granada, former capital to the Caliphs and Almoravids. The city's most noted period in history was the occupation of the Moors, who fled to Granada from Cordoba and ruled Spain under the Nasrid dynasty. During their stay, they built the lavish Alhambra Palace, one of the world's largest and most extraordinary fortresses and the Generalife, an opulent summer retreat.

Lisbon is many cities, from the cobbled alleys of the Alfama district to the broad Parisian style avenues at its heart. View it all from the heights of St. George's Castle. Belem's Monument to the Discoveries recalls the seafaring past, while nearby Sintra's storybook palaces, and the seaside resort of Caiscais, have different tales to tell.

Appropriately translated as Beautiful Island of the Sea, Belle-Ile-en-Mer is situated in the exquisite Brittany section of France. Belle-Ile-en-Mer is famous for its crystalline spring water and for the village of Sauzon, often painted by Monet. At the decree of local authorities, only one side of the island has been developed. Visitors will enjoy the vision of unsullied beauty.

Discover the relics of old Ireland on a port call to Dun Laoghaire, located only 15 minutes from Dublin. In Dublin, visit Trinity College and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Tour the emerald countryside of Portmamock, and visit nearby Malahide Castle, or see the magnificent Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow.
